Here are some reflections on my experience that might help you decide.

I had always wondered what one of these events would be like but had been put off by the thought of the full-on stadium experience, so participating virtually from the comfort of home seemed like a good way to go. It also meant saving on travel and accommodation costs.

These types of events always attract a lot of out-going, energetic, extroverted people and for me, I can only handle those kinds of folk in small doses. So this format seemed right up my street.

The event is delivered via Zoom over four days and the content pretty much matches the in-person experience with a few adaptations to reflect the fact it’s online. You’re also sent a physical pack that includes a workbook and a piece of wood. More on that shortly.

For the one I went to, there were 18,000 people from 129 countries taking part. We were split into virtual teams, I was in Team 7 which had 345 people, and was supported by a number of event co-ordinators. They were on hand to answer questions and to encourage engagement.

The way that it works is that Tony and his crew are in a TV studio in Florida which has two walls of huge flat screens behind and in front of them, around 50 feet wide and 20 feet high. All of the Zoom screens of the participants are beamed onto these screens and the presenters interact with individuals throughout. It’s really well done and doesn’t feel like a traditional online meeting. The following video shows how this works.

UPW Virtual overview

In terms of timing – this is intense. It started at 12 lunchtime and went onto at least midnight, sometimes one or nearing 2am during the four days, with only a few breaks. “Immersion” is how it’s described and by the end of the 53 hours of training you are truly immersed! But is it any good?

The Good

Peak State

One of the biggest takeaways for me was around being able to change our mental state through our bodies. You are encouraged to get out of your seat and to dance, jump and interact when called to do so. At first I felt foolish and not at all up for this, but I made the decision to give it a go, and surprisingly, after a few hours of engaging with the uplifting music, content and movement I did feel mentally different.

Getting into a ‘peak state’ definitely does enable positive experiences, and it’s possible to do this at any time by activating our bodies. Whether it’s through jumping, dancing, or walking, it works. And this correlates with all the medical research and advice around using exercise to improve mental health. It’s described at UPW as ‘getting out of your head and into your body’ and this is something worth embedding into our daily routines.

Content

There is a lot of useful, valuable content provided throughout the event. From understanding how our minds work and human needs to finding your passion and putting a plan in place to make progress, there is a lot that is helpful and practical.

Things that resonated with me were around knowledge: we all accumulate information from books and courses, but if you haven’t put it into practice then you don’t truly know it, and then there’s the power of peer groups – spending time with those who have similar aspirations and desires as you, or who have done what you are seeking to do.

At the end of the first day there’s an exercise where you identify the things that are holding you back in life and write them on a piece of wood and are then shown how to karate chop the wood into two to ‘break through’ your problems. It’s a wee bit contrived but there’s definitely a sense of satisfaction as you break the board.

Interaction

Throughout the event, Tony and the other presenters interact with the audience, which is really well done. However, the best aspect of this is the breakout rooms – for particular exercises you are put into small Zoom rooms with maybe 3 or 4 people and you work with people from around the world on specific tasks. This is definitely valuable and useful and I’d say one of the best aspects of the event.

Beliefs can be changed

On the third day there’s a very powerful exercise where you identify your limiting beliefs and learn how to eliminate them. The overarching process centres on changing your state so you can change your story and then put in place a strategy for success. It’s definitely an eye opener and one of the highlights of the experience. It’s one of those things that really needs to be experienced but it definitely gave me perspective on some of my own beliefs and how easily they can be changed.

The Bad

There are some aspects of the experience that weren’t so great. While I get the idea of total immersion, I don’t think the 53 hours of content is perfect. Far from it. The niggles for me were that:

No agenda

You have no idea what’s coming next, when breaks will be, or when the day will end. You’re totally locked in and feel you have to stick to the screen in case you miss anything. And I think this is deliberate so that you watch not just the good, useful content, but the less useful and unfortunately significant proportion of content that promotes Tony’s other courses.

Four days is also a big commitment, and there is definitely room for editing across the programme.

Upselling

Across the four days there are at least five or six hours of time dedicated to upselling other programmes to you. And these are expensive courses. It starts to become a bit frustrating, and as there’s no agenda, you need to watch the sales pitch in case you miss the start of some useful content.

The real niggle I had with this is that a lot of time and energy is spent getting folk into a peak state, and then, when in that state, you are sold to. Don’t get me wrong, I think that the courses are of a high quality but it just feels like a bit too much marketing for me.

Momentum

The event definitely energises you and is a good way to reflect on where you are and put in place some plans to make progress. However, I personally felt that there isn’t enough content around how to embed the lessons into daily life and make ongoing progress post-event.

(On a related side note, I discovered Benjamin Hardy’s AMP programme – which is a great course for creating momentum for achieving your goals. More on that another time.)

The takeaways

If you’ve ever been curious about a Tony Robbins event, this virtual experience is a good way to see what it’s all about, without breaking the bank. Despite the niggles there’s a lot of value. It’s still several hundred dollars to participate, but I think you do get your money’s worth – you will certainly remember it.

If that’s too much to stomach, a cheaper option is Tony’s ‘Awaken the giant within’ book that contains most of the same content and is available very cheaply.

The team/group participation is excellent and this doesn’t feel like a typical online course. It does feel like you’re participating in an event, you will learn some useful things about yourself and your goals, and overall it’s really well done. It’s the best online experience I’ve been to from a production/delivery perspective.

The best thing about it is the content, connection and energy you get from taking part. Getting into a peak state is a great way to motivate yourself to tackle anything you’re facing. There’s a UPW playlist on Spotify that includes the music that is used at the event. Try it out and see if it gets you moving.

In conclusion, it might not be for everybody, but it’s certainly an experience I’d recommend.

Have you ever wondered what happens at a Tony Robbins Unleash the Power Within event and whether it’s worth going to?
