A slightly random yet very enjoyable book. Jeff Tweedy, of Wilco fame, outlines his process for writing songs with a selection of useful exercises to get your juices flowing. Whether you’re an aspiring musician or not, there’s some useful pearls about the creative process to be gleaned from this.

From routines that will help you to capture ideas using words and phrases to practical steps to assemble your ideas into a song, this is an easy book to listen to. Jeff explains the importance of mindset, and of course, the steps you need to take to take action. He creates a song following the process described and you get to hear the final product at the end.

I’d definitely recommend the audio version of this, as you will hear the exercises as they are described and get a real sense of what’s going on. Jeff has a warm, engaging tone, and the three hours flies by. I bought this based on a recommendation and it was a pleasant surprise. I’ll definitely be trying some of the exercises, and not just for music.

Jeff says we all have a song in us, which I think is true, this book could really help you to release some of your inner creativity.
